This morning, we held the 5th CRES Wake-Up Call, exploring one of the most important questions facing education today:

“What AI changes in schools, and what it does not.”

We were delighted to welcome Guido van Dijk, current President of CRES and founder of LeX Consultancy, who invited us to look at AI not simply as a new tool, but as a mirror reflecting how we teach, learn and assess.

The session explored some thought-provoking questions:

🔹 What happens to learning when AI can do the processing for us?
🔹 Are we measuring learning or simply the product a student can produce?
🔹 How should homework and assessment change when AI can reproduce and summarise information?
🔹 What is the role of the teacher when AI can provide explanations and answers?
🔹 And perhaps most importantly: how can we help students use AI to think rather than use it to avoid thinking?

Guido also shared research and examples showing that the impact of AI on learning depends greatly on how it is designed and integrated into teaching, as well as on the learners, subject, context and type of task.

💡 One key message from the session: AI may change the tools we use in education, but it does not remove the need for meaningful learning, critical thinking, good teaching and thoughtful assessment.
